The intutive knowledge of a farmer or a gardener is the same. The leap in scale from gardener to farmer is one of technique and tools rather than instinct. The knowledge of a small scale gardener can be applied to large scale production with the application of larger tools…the rest is down to experience. Experience cannot be taught or bought because it is just what it says… experiential. Wise application of tools comes with time, and in the case of good farmers it is multi-generational. Those of us who`s families left the land during the industrial reveloution or before have lost the handed down knowledge of experience. However, intuitive knowledge of the earth exsists in us all and creates that craving for a return to nature, the land, countryside. Be it a garden, a farm or a walk in the park…

The food we eat is full of minerals composed of elements drawn from the earth and atmosphere. Healthy food requires a healthy soil. A healthy soil is not just a question of fertility in terms of NPK (nitrogen, phosphorous potassium). To ask if your soil is healthy ask lots of questions…, what is the mineral content of the soil, the water content , the air , what is that trace element composition, the structure, the ph….how healthy is the biological life, the fungi, the microbes, the insects, the bacteria, the animals that roam upon it ?.

Or, if that is too complicated ask yourself does the soil feel good !?
